Tattoos have always been a part of culture for the people from the Pacific islands, especially for the people from Hawaii. Tattoos have been a part of them for many thousand years. They use it as a symbol of celebration, as a mark of their tribe and also for self expression.
Unlike tattoo artists today, the tools used by the tattoo designers in Hawaii were mostly derived from the nature. They used the beak of a bird, claws and also larger bones from the fishes. They might not be the best if they have to use an email marketing software, but if you give them just the beak of a bird they can surely do wonders.
Most of the tattoo designs in the Hawaiian culture were geometrical or symmetrical, which evolved into pictorial shapes of animals. This was mainly due to the European effect. The pictures of animals were also used to express bravery or strength.
To understand the real significance of tattoos in the Hawaiian culture, you will have to understand the root of the word tattoo. The word for tattoo in Hawaiian is uhi, and it means covering. Hierarchy is highly respected in the Hawaiian culture and tattoos in many ways were also a pictorial depiction of the hierarchy a person is under. Women who wear tattoos wear it on their hands, feet, fingers and calves.
Hawaiian men use tattoos as a sign of status and respect. Some designs were exclusively made for the chief of the tribe and his family by highly skilled tattoo designers. The rest of the population get it done from apprentices. In comparison to men, the tattoo design for women were less extensive also because they were limited to just the feet, arms, ears and lips. Most of the tattoo designs in the Hawaiian culture have a much deeper personal meaning, so disliking a tattoo may also mean that you dislike the person and this is something that should be completely avoided while being with a Hawaiian. If you would like to get a very authentic tattoo design, then it’s always better to get it done in Hawaii than elsewhere.
